cautionary tale for others と「他山の石」「反面教師」

前回取り上げたクオモ州知事についての記事には cautionary tale for... という言い回しが出てきて、イディオムということではないと思うが、おもしろい言い方だと思ったので書いてみたい。

前回あげた部分のすぐ後に続く、次のパラグラフに出てきた。

- Yet Cuomo, felled by a sexual harassment controversy that appears to be an expression of his own ego and hubris, is now a cautionary tale for those other top governors in the white-hot glare of Covid-19's leadership test.

ネットで検索すると、実例がそれなりに見つかった。イディオムとまではいえないかもしれないが、この形で使われることが結構あるとはいえそうだ。

- The constant drumbeat of damaging stories has transformed Uber from a poster child of the industry into a cautionary tale for startups trying to grow at all costs while refusing to grow up.

- Americans: Watch the next few hours in the UK closely.
If the Labour Party's election night goes as disastrously as early exit polls foretell, the Democratic Party may see a cautionary tale for the US 2020 presidential race.

- Kim believes this case should serve as a cautionary tale for others. When it comes to social media sites, he said, “You really have to know the people you are communicating with. If you don’t absolutely know who’s on the other end, you shouldn’t be sending personal information or photographs.”

この表現は「他人にとって教訓となる話」ということだが、「他山の石」「反面教師」といった日本語も頭に浮かんだ。

もちろん、文脈・内容によってはそうした意味で使えるのではないかということで、 cautionary tale for others と１対１で結びつけていいということではない。

ちなみに手持ちの和英辞典をみると、「他山の石」と「反面教師」はそれぞれ、

- lesson to be learned from others' mistakes
（スーパーアンカー和英辞典）

- a person from whose bad example one can learn
- a good example of what not to do [how not to behave]
（研究社和英大辞典）

などと訳されていた。

なお、「他山の石」と「反面教師」は似ているが、前者は「自分を磨く石にする」ということで、自分を高めるために役立てる、という意味合いがあるそうだ。
