apples and oranges 「まったく別のもの」「比べようがないもの」

前回 apples to apples を取り上げた並びで apples and oranges についてごく短く書いておきたい。実はこちらを知っていたので前回の表現もピンと来たのだが、「リンゴとオレンジ」は種類が違う果物ということで、「比較できない別のもの」「似ていないもの」を指す。「水と油」にたとえられる場合もありそうだ。

これを使った compare apples and oranges は、前回の compare apples and apples の逆にあたる表現といえるもので、「似ていないものを無理やり比べる」「本来は別の話」という感じになるだろう。
