egregious 「実にひどい」と gregarious との関係

アメリカが北京五輪の”外交ボイコット”を決めたが、それを発表する記者会見で報道官が egregious という単語を使っていた。

日常レベルではあまり使われない言葉だろうし、英語学習者は難しい単語を無理に追う必要はないという意見もある。しかし、ふだん見聞きしなくても実際に使われることがあるのなら、やはり高みは目指したいものだと思う。

ホワイトハウスのサキ Psaki 報道官が述べた言葉は、次のようなものだった。なおここに出てくる PRC は People's Republic of China 「中華人民共和国」の略称である。

- US diplomatic or official representation would treat these games as business as usual in the face of the PRC's egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang, and we simply can't do that.



英和辞典には、「悪名高い」「名うての」「目にあまる」「とてつもない」などといった訳語が並んでいる。「新疆ウイグル自治区における中国のはなはだしい人権侵害」ということである。

英語圏の辞書を見ると、

とあるが、この長い語源の説明を書き抜いたのはわけがある。

「群れの中で突出した、目立つ」という原意が悪い方に使われるようになったと想像できるが、単語の綴りとあわせてこの由来を眺めていたら、gregarious 「群れを作る」「群生する」「社交的な」を連想したのだ。

辞書を引くと、やはり語源に共通要素があり、どちらも「群れ」を意味するラテン語から来ていることがわかった。

だから何だ、と言われると困ってしまうのだが、私としてはこういう発見はおもしろい。単語習得は無味乾燥になりがちなので、少しでも気を引く情報があるのはありがたいことでもある。

egregious について、もう少し英語圏の辞書から説明を引用しておこう。

- The word has made a 180-degree turn from its original sense in Latin, when it meant "exceptionally good." Word historians have speculated that the negative usage was originally meant to be ironic, but it is the only sense that has survived. Be careful not to use it to mean "outstanding," since no one wants to be called egregious.

３つめにあるように、もとはいい意味で「目立つ」だったのが180度逆転し、今では悪い方の意味だけが残っているというわけである。これまたおもしろい情報で、言葉は時とともに変わっていくことを示す実例といえるだろう。
