“Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?”

先日読んだ記事に other-than-that-how-was-the-play-Mrs. Lincoln という表現が出てきた。形容詞にするためにつけたハイフンを取れば元の形になるはずだが、どういう意味だろうか。手持ちのどの辞書にも載っていない。

まずはCNNのウェブ記事から該当部分を引用しよう。

- In an interview with Donald Trump earlier this week, conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt said something truly breathtaking.

"You know, Mr. President, you and I disagree about the election, but we agree on so much," Hewitt told Trump, segueing into a conversation about China's hypersonic missiles.

segue into は「間を置かず次に続く」「途切れずに次へなだれ込む」、また Talk about... は「まさに～そのものだ」「～なんてものじゃない」と強調する表現である。

そしてハイフンをはずした肝心の Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln? だが、Lincoln や play から、アメリカのリンカーン大統領に関係があると想像できる。大統領は1865年、劇場で喜劇を観劇中に暗殺された。

「それはそうと奥様、劇はいかがでしたか？」ということになるが、ここの that が指しているのは暗殺事件のはずだ。場違いというかとんでもない悪趣味というか、実際にはありえない質問だ。一種のブラックジョークなのだろう。

ウェブで検索したところ、けっこうヒットがあった。辞書では見つからないものの、ネイティブスピーカーの間では知られているらしい。なお other than that の代わりに aside from that や outside of what happened、また how was the play ではなく how did you like the play などとしている実例もあった。

この表現を取り上げていた例外的なオンライン辞書が、こうした時に頼りになる Urban Dictionary だった。記載されていた説明を複数引用しよう。ひとつ目の説明に出てくる "playing the world's tiniest violin with one's fingers" がこれまた謎だが、それはとりあえず放っておくことにする。

- A sarcastic phrase meant to downplay the complaint or misfortune of another person, similar to playing the world's tiniest violin with one's fingers.
It is a reference to the assassination of President Lincoln. Can be substituted with any phrase referring to a tragic event, such as, "Other than that, how was the flight, Sullie?"
"I just found out I have to work this weekend." "Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?"

- You say this dark/macabre humor phrase to lighten things up when both people have been discussing sad topics. You laugh a little bit because it is so bad to say and then you move on to talking about lighter subject things again. It is a segue (a conversational bridge) from sad subjects back to lighter ones.

ということで、何かネガティブな話をしていた時に、その暗さを吹き飛ばすための合いの手のように使われる表現、ということになりそうだ。

実際に使われた例にもっと触れてみないと十分には把握できないというのが正直なところだが、今回は未知だったおもしろい表現に出会ったということで、生煮えの内容ながらあえてメモとして書いてみたしだいである。詳しいことをご存知の方がいらしたらご教示願いたい。
