infra dig 「みっともない」「沽券にかかわる」

前回引用した、過去形と過去分詞の使用についての「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙の記事から、infra dig という表現を紹介したい。辞書には「体面にかかわる」「品格を下げる」といった訳語が載っている。

いかにもラテン語から来たという感じの言葉で、事実そうなのだが、辞書を見ると、いずれもインフォーマルとか口語として扱われている。その由来からフォーマルな表現と思いきや、そうではないのが意外だったので、取り上げようと思ったしだいである。

前回書いたように、この記事は「本来 "I have swum" とすべきところを "I have swam" にするといった、過去分詞の代わりに過去形を使う事例がネイティブスピーカーの間に見られるようになっている」という興味深い内容だが、こうした傾向について、今回の infra dig を使って次のように書かれていた。

このように、どれも colloquial とか informal とか casual というスピーチラベルをつけており、ラテン語由来の言葉だから文語的表現だとか堅苦しいというわけではない、というのがおもしろい。実際にネイティブスピーカーがそのように使うのか、尋ねて確かめてみたいところではある。
