「答え」ではない answer

英語上級者をめざすうえでは、知らない単語の増強と並んで、すでに知っている単語が持つ”意外な意味”に気づくことも重要だと思っている。

先日あるところで、ある英文に出てきた answer to を「～に対する答え」と訳していた例に出会った。

文脈を考えれば、「答え」では意味が通らないと気づくことができたはずだといえる例だった。

また、中途半端な多読・速読を重ねていると、こうした落とし穴にハマってしまうことがあるといえるかもしれないとも思った。

それはともかく、その英文での answer to は、「～に相当（対応・匹敵）する人・もの」という意味で使われていた。どの英和辞典を見ても、この単語の語義で下の方に記述されているので、なかなか気づかないかもしれない。

先に書いた不適切な訳の実例をあげるのは差し障りがあるかもしれないので、自分が作り続けている英語学習メモやウェブにある実例から引用しておこう。今となっては内容的にずいぶん古いものあるがご了承願いたい。

- Microsoft has finally unveiled its answer to the iPad, and it's... Windows? At the company's Build conference last week, it showed off Windows 8, the next version of its PC operating system and its next-generation tablet interface. So Microsoft's answer to the iPad is also Microsoft's answer to Lion?

- On June 11, Apple showed its next operating system for iPhones and iPads. It offered maps and speech recognition, plus music and movies on iTunes, all tied via the Internet to Apple's "cloud" of servers.
A week later, Microsoft, known better for software, demonstrated the Surface tablet, its answer to the iPad.

- Truffle hunting is a tradition often imagined as an upper-class past time, Italy's answer to for hunting, and has inspired luxury tourism.

辞書から説明や例文を引用しよう。

なお、動詞の answer to は「～に申し開きをする責任がある」とか「（人に）従う」といった意味がある。気になる方は辞書でご確認いただきたい。

英語学習の最初期に学ぶ answer だが、このような単語について、一度じっくりと辞書の記述すべてに目を通してみるのもムダではないだろう。
