at pocket change prices 「安い値段で」 [日本のニュース]
賃金が上がらないなか海外に働き口を求める日本人が増えている現状を最近の The Economist 誌が取り上げていた。その記事に pocket change という言い回しが使われていたので取り上げてみよう。
- He reckons there is no country "that could beat Japan in terms of liveability," including safety and cleanliness. He also misses his excursions to Japanese fast-food chains, which serve tasty meals at pocket-change prices.

数年前からアメリカで働いている29歳のIT関係者の言葉である。ここにあるように日本の良いところをあげてはいるが、それにもかかわらず、他国と比べての賃金の安さに危機感を感じて、日本を飛び出したという。
pocket change は文字通りにはポケットに入っている硬貨ということだが、「小銭」や「はした金」を指す。
日本では、ファストフードのチェーン店に行けば、安い値段で味の良い食べ物にありつける、ということを言っているわけである。
そんなものかなと思うが、確かにアメリカなどで外食に必要な値段は、日本の感覚では驚くような高値だ。逆にいえば日本の賃金がそれだけ低水準ということになるだろう。
英語圏の辞書からこの表現の説明や例文を引用しよう。

確かに賃金を主眼とした「アルバイト」感覚の人もいるだろうが、日本という国に見切りをつけて海外に移る若い人の割合も高まっていくのではないだろうか。
同じテーマについての国内のテレビリポートを先日見たが、国内よりもずっと高給の上、いわゆるワーク・ライフ・バランスが明確できっちりとプライベートの時間を持つことができるとあれば、日本より物価が高くても「人間らしい生活」ができる方を取る、という人が増えてもおかしくない。
以前から「日本人の国際化」の必要性が叫ばれていたが、それがかつて言われていたのとは違った形で進み、日本社会が痩せ細っていきかねない事態をもたらしているようにも見え、複雑な気持ちになる。
