a rump Ukraine 「土地を奪われた後のウクライナ」 [ニュースと英語]
たった一語の英単語なのに、日本語で簡潔・的確に表現するのに手こずる場合がある。先日 a rump Ukraine という言い回しを目にしたが、ここでの rump もそんな例と言えそうだ。
英誌「エコノミスト」に載っていたもので、まずはそれを引用しよう。
- The Ukrainian army's stated aim is to restore the borders of 1991 by seizing Crimea and the four provinces Mr Putin annexed in September.
It should take all it can. The strategic reason for this is that a rump Ukraine would be impoverished and hard to defend. The east and south of the country are sources of minerals and crops, and centres of industry.

rump は「尻」「ランプ肉」といった意味のほか、「残った部分」「残り物」「残りかす」「残党」という意味がある。上記の実例にこうした訳語をそのままあてはめて使っても、何だか舌足らずで意味がはっきりしない。
さらに英和辞典を読んでいくと、
- （多数の構成員の脱退や追放後、残余の構成員だけで正規の名のもとに活動を続ける）残余国会（委員会など）
(研究社新英和大辞典)
といった意味が載っている。
こうした記述や、記事の内容や文脈に沿って考えると、a rump Ukraine は、たとえば「ロシアに土地を奪われた後に残されたウクライナ」「ロシアに占領され失った地域を除いた残りの部分のウクライナ」、Russia, the rump successor to the Soviet Union は「構成国が脱退してソビエト連邦が崩壊した後に残って連邦の後継者となったロシア」というように解釈すればいいだろうか。
いずれにせよ、ここでの rump を１対１対応で的確かつ簡潔に表すことができる日本語は私には思いつかない。言葉の難しさ、同時に面白さを感じさせる実例だと思う。
今回の rump の説明を英語圏の辞書から引用しよう。イギリス英語でよく使われるとの注があるが、上で引用した「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙の論説記事は、アメリカ人ジャーナリストのトーマス・フリードマン Thomas L. Friedman 氏が書いたものである。
