Say it ain't so と 動詞の intimate [英語文化のトリビア]
今回は、先日読んだ英誌「エコノミスト」の記事で目にとまった２つの単語表現についてをメモしておきたい。冊子版では３月11日号に載っていた、アメリカのバイデン大統領についての記事である。
まず記事のタイトルだが、"Say it ain't Joe" というもの。これは明らかに、Say it ain't so. という表現のもじりだろう。
ain't は is not や are not、am not などの非標準の短縮形だ。そこで教科書で教わることはないだろうが、口語では耳にすることがある。
直訳すると、「そうでないと言ってくれ」となるが、「そんなのウソだろ」「本当じゃないんでしょ？」という感じである。そしてこの言い回しは、まさに "Say it ain't so, Joe." という形で使われたのが発端だったという。
ここでの Joe は、20世紀のはじめに活躍した Joe Jackson というメジャーリーガーのことである。名選手として人気を博したが、八百長に関係していたことが発覚し、ファンを裏切る形で球界を去ることになった。その時に少年ファンが彼に言ったのが、この "Say it ain't so, Joe!" だった、ということである。
しかし、どうやらこれは事実ではないらしい。Wikipedia の記述を見ると、
- After the grand jury returned its indictments, Charley Owens of the Chicago Daily News wrote a regretful tribute headlined, "Say it ain't so, Joe." The phrase became legendary when another reporter later erroneously attributed it to a child outside the courthouse:
When Jackson left the criminal court building in the custody of a sheriff after telling his story to the grand jury, he found several hundred youngsters, aged from 6 to 16, waiting for a glimpse of their idol. One child stepped up to the outfielder, and, grabbing his coat sleeve, said:
"It ain't true, is it, Joe?"
"Yes, kid, I'm afraid it is," Jackson replied. (中略)
In an interview in Sport nearly three decades later, Jackson confirmed that the legendary exchange never occurred.

そして今回の The Economist の記事だが、１期限りと思われていたバイデン大統領が再選に意欲を見せるようになっていることや、それをとりまく民主党の現状について取り上げたもので、バイデン氏のファーストネームにあわせて "Say it ain't Joe" と意味深に題した形となっている。うまいもんだな、と思う。
なお、この記事はウェブ版では "What if Joe Biden decided against running for re-election?" というタイトルになっているが、これよりも冊子版の方がずっとおもしろいと感じる。スペースに限りがあり字数制限がより厳しいため、短くてパンチのあるタイトルを工夫する必要があるからだろうが、むしろ冊子版にはプラスに働いているようだ。
もうひとつメモしておきたいのは、この記事の最初のパラグラフにあった単語である。

形容詞の intimate は「親密な」という意味だが、異性との関係について使うと性的な意味を示すことがままあるので要注意、ということはよく知られていると思う。しかし、ここでは動詞として使われているので、あれっと思った。
辞書を引くと、「それとなくほのめかす」「暗示する」という訳語が載っている。古い意味としては「通知する、公表する」ということも表していたそうだ。なお形容詞は /ˈɪntɪmət/、動詞は /ˈɪntɪmeɪt/ と異なるので、注意が必要だ。
英語圏の辞書から、動詞の定義や例文を引用しよう。

形容詞の意味とはずいぶんかけ離れているように思えるが、語源の説明を読むと、共通したものがあることがわかる。それを書くと細かくなるので、興味がある方は調べていただければ幸いである。
余談だが、私が若い頃、ダリル・ホールとジョン・オーツというデュオによる "Say It Isn't So" という曲が大ヒットした。Say it ain't so. という表現もそのつながりで知ったものである。ノスタルジーがあることも否定しないが、でもいま聴いても素晴らしい曲だと思う。
