diaspora 「国外への移住（者）」 [単語・表現]
少し前の英文記事を読んでいたら、「ディアスポラ」として日本語にもなっている diaspora が、「こんな意味でも使われるんだ」ということに気づかされた文があったので、メモしておきたい。
diaspora（英語の発音は /daɪˈæspərə/）は、紀元前にユダヤ人が土地を追われた「離散」を指す言葉で、この地域について多少なりとも見聞きしたことがあれば、知っているという人も多いと思う。
今回、英誌「エコノミスト」で使われていたのは、日本とインドの関係についての記事で、イスラエルやユダヤ人と関係のない内容だった。
- India, for its part, has long been frustrated with Japan's restrictive immigration policy. ...The resulting lack of a sizeable Indian diaspora in Japan makes it harder to form the deep ties India has with America, Britain and some Gulf countries, which Indians have been emigrating to for decades.

ここでの diaspora は、ユダヤ人の「離散」ではなく、内容・文脈から、日本へのインド人の「移住（者）」を指しているはずである。辞書を見るとその通りで、「（国や地域からの）集団移住」「国外離散」といった訳語が載っている。ユダヤ人とその歴史に限って使われる言葉ではないのだった。
さらに辞書を読むと、ユダヤ人の「離散」については定冠詞をつけ、しばしば大文字で始めて the Diaspora となることがわかる。普通名詞としては、上記の例のように小文字となる。
英語圏の辞書から引用しよう。

- 民族・人々の集団移住；離散；集団移住した人々（移民と違って、土地への同化よりも本国の文化や民族性を保持しているニュアンスがある；総称すれば単数形、各地にある複数の集団をさすときには複数形になる）
