「歩行者」ではない pedestrian [注意したい単語・意外な意味]
最近は「ペデストリアン・デッキ」などと日本語になりつつある感もある pedestrian には、「歩行者（の）」とは違う意外な意味がある。
このブログですでに触れたと思っていたが、そうではなかったことに気づいたので、書いてみたい。
このところ再読し英語表現を取り上げている短編推理小説シリーズ「黒後家蜘蛛の会」の原書に何度か出てきたからである。
このシリーズの作品は、ほとんどが雑誌に発表されたものだが、作者のアイザック・アシモフは単行本にする際、各編に短い「あとがき」(Afterword) をつけている。ネタの着想に至った舞台裏を書いていたりして、これがけっこうおもしろい。
そうした「あとがき」によると、作品の掲載にあたって雑誌側は、アシモフのつけたタイトルを変えて発表することが時々あって、アシモフは単行本化の時に、たいてい自分が考えた元の題名に戻してしまうという。
その理由だが、

この形容詞 pedestrian を辞書で引くと、「平凡な」「ありふれた」「つまらない」「単調な」といった訳語が載っている。
手製の英語学習ノートを見ると、いずれも pedestrian detail という組み合わせで使われた下記の実例を拾ってメモしていた。一つ目の Billy とは歌手のビリー・ジョエル、二つ目の Cheney はブッシュ政権の副大統領ディック・チェイニーのことである。
- Another accident of Billy’s upbringing that could have been a pedestrian detail but would prove a major theme in his life was simply being a Long Islander.

しかし、なぜこうもかけ離れた意味を持っているのか。英語圏の辞書サイトで語源の説明をいくつか読んだが、いまひとつはっきりしない。
本来は語源の異なる別々の単語が、綴りの変遷を経て、現代英語ではたまたま同じスペリングになった、というケースも時おりあるが、pedestrian はそういうことではないようだ。
目を通した中では、Merriam-Webster の記述が、語源の直接の説明ではないものの多少はわかったような気にさせてくれた。少し長いが引用しよう。

How Should You Use pedestrian?
Most of us know pedestrian as a noun meaning someone who travels on foot. But the adjective sense of pedestrian as defined here is actually its original meaning. To be pedestrian was to be drab or dull, as if plodding along on foot rather than speeding on horseback or by coach. Pedestrian is often used to describe a colorless or lifeless writing style, but it can also describe politicians, public tastes, personal qualities, or possessions. In comparison with the elaborate stage shows put on by today's rock artists, for instance, most of the stage presentations of 1960s rock stars seem pedestrian.

最後に脱線だが、アシモフの作品が雑誌の編集部にタイトルを変えられたということは、何も特別なことではないようで、日本のメディアでもよくあるはずだ。
ニュースを集めたインターネットのサイトで、時おり本文の内容を正しく反映していないと感じる見出しやタイトルを目にすることがある。コメント欄に「（記事を書いた）筆者の見識を疑う」とか「◯◯新聞の記者の偏向ぶりを示している」といった意見も書かれていたりする。
しかしそうした見出しは、実際には書いた当人ではなく、掲載したサイトなどの別の人がつけたケースが相当あると思う。
見出しやタイトルをつけるのにはセンスが問われるだろうが、目を引こうとするあまり、センセーショナリズムに走って内容を正しく反映していないケースがないか、読む方も気をつけなくてはいけないだろう。
