run-of-the-mill 「ありふれた」 [読書と英語]
前回は pedestrian に「ありふれた」という意外な意味があることに触れたが、同じ意味を表す、もっと”ありふれている”と思われる表現が run-of-the mill である。
このところ続けて取り上げているアイザック・アシモフの短編推理小説シリーズ「黒後家蜘蛛の会」に、この表現が何度か使われていたので、メモしておこう。
いずれも第１巻にあたる Tales of the Black Widowers に収録されている作品である。
- Anything said in that room can't be repeated outside and I do not wish to talk in confidence. I don't mind finding myself hushed up about average run-of-the-mill misdeeds, but murder is another thing altogether.

- The police should have thought of that, but it's so easy these days to dismiss run-of-the-mill crimes of violence as the work of addicts.

手製の英語学習ノートに、他の本で拾った実例をメモしてあったので書いておこう。形容詞なので more をつけることができるわけである。
- Yet there is in Cantata 21 a freshness missing from the more run-of-the-mill Italian imitations of the day.

今回の表現はけっこう知られていると思うので、「今さら」という方もおられるだろうが、なぜ run-of-the-mill が ordinary とか unremarkable の意味になるのか、という点に今回興味を持った。
ネットで調べると、由来については「製作所で機械によって大量に画一的に作られるようになった製品」から、比喩的に形容詞として使われるようになった、というような説明が多かった。

具体的に製品について、
- The mill in question was a weaving mill and the articles first called 'run of the mill' were clothes.

としている記述がある一方で、
- The phrase, used in its colloquial sense since the early 20th century, does have its origins in, you guessed it, mills. The phrase was actually a noun first, not an adjective, used for a product that hadn't been graded or sorted in anyway. Manufactured goods were typically separated based on quality so they could be sold at different prices. Run-of-the-mill goods therefore had no guarantee of their quality, and pretty quickly the phrase came to be synonymous with something lacking in any remarkable quality.

という、由来そのものについてちょっと違った説をあげているものもあった。たかだが100年ほど前に使われるようになった比較的新しい表現であっても、由来が明確とは限らないということだろうか。

面白い表現ですね。millはもともと小麦粉を作るための粉ひき機ですから、当然川沿いにはriver millがあり、風車を使えばはwindmill（風車は粉ひき以外に水のくみ上げなどにも使った）。textile mill, steel millなどの動力を使った工場（生産プロセス）などにも発達したようです。産業革命以降の大量生産に由来する表現かなと想像します。

現代社会の mill といえば、わたし的には treadmill でしょうか。足踏みをして回す mill ということですが、今では「トレッドミル」として日本語にもなりつつある屋内ランニングマシーン（ルームランナー）、また「単調・退屈な仕事」を指すようになっていますね。その他にペットなど小動物が乗って走り続ける「回し車」にも使われるようです。
