writer's block 「（作家の）スランプ」 [読書と英語]
前回取り上げた作家アシモフの短編推理小説「黒後家蜘蛛の会」シリーズの原書から、表現をもうひとつ。writer's block は内容・文脈から想像できそうだが、物書きがアイデアが出なくなったりして著述に行き詰まり、書けなくなることを指す。
"The Black Widowers" の第１巻と第２巻に収録されている作品から、それぞれ実例である。
- Emmanuel Rubin...had broken out of a writer's block and was avidly giving the details of the story he had finished.

自分の英語学習ファイルを検索してみたら、ずいぶん前に取り上げて表現をいくつか紹介したSF小説 Redshirts （邦題「レッドスーツ」）（→例えばこちら）からも、この言葉の実例をメモしていた。その時に取り上げる考えは浮かばなかったのか、そう思ったがほったらかしにしたまま忘れてしまったのか。
上にあげた動詞との組み合わせ以外の実例にもなっているので、挙げてみよう。
- Now I have writer’s block, I don’t know how to solve it, and if I don’t figure it out soon, I’m going to get fired.

なおついでだが、３つめの最後に出てくる wet my pants は、「お漏らしをする」ということだが、文字通りの意味の他に、

ということで、比喩的に日本語の「ちびる」と似たように使えるケースもあるように思う。

アシモフの短編には面白い表現がたくさんあるようで、私も読んでみたくなりました。writer's blockをスランプの意味で使うのが興味深いです。obstacleと同じblockですね。Some call it writer's block, others, cruelly, call it a lack of creativity.などと辛らつな例文がOxfordにありました。また、全然関係ありませんが、writer's crampというのも辞書に並んで出ていて、こちらは書きすぎて指が痛い、しびれることとあります。こちらは文字通りのようですが。つながりのない話ですいません。

「ブラック・ウィドワーズ」の諸短編は基本的に会話劇で、かつその中にちょっとハイブラウな単語が混じっているので、研究のしがいがあるかもしれません。といってももう数十年前の作品ですが。
writer's crampという表現の紹介もありがとうございました。
