narrative「出来事を伝える話」「説話」「ナラティブ」

先日取り上げた trajectory は近ごろよく目にする感があるが、同様に見る頻度が高くなった単語が narrative である。英和辞典には「物語」という訳語が載っているが、フィクションというより実際に起きたことを語る場合によく使われるようだ。そうした注をつけている辞書もある。

実例をいくつか見ていきたいが、最初の例はトランプ政権にかかわる内容で、 false がついているので「デマ」とか「風説」というように考えればいいかもしれない。

- Despite the fact that news orgs are continuing to cover the coronavirus crisis every hour of every day, some GOP leaders continue to push the pathetic lie that media outlets are downplaying or outright ignoring the pandemic. On Tuesday, Sen. Ted Cruz became the latest Republican to promote this false narrative.

次は広島・長崎への原爆投下について使われたもので、「通説」という感じだろうか。

- The United States has always insisted that the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were necessary to end World War Two. But it is a narrative that has little emphasis on the terrible human cost.

次の例は、国民に一体感を持たせるような共通体験、あるいは共通認識を形成する出来事を表現していると思われる。

- No country can last long without a shared narrative. You wonder, on an Independence Day when the mood of the country is more angry and fearful than it has been in a long time, if this nation can ever have such a thing again.

このように、辞書にある「物語」とか「説明」といった訳語だけではカバーできない単語といえそうで、文脈や内容に沿って考えないといけないだろう。

そのためか、最近は日本語でも「ナラティブ」というカタカナ語を見るようになった。多くの人にとって意味不明だろうから、不親切というかズルいというか、逆に言えばピタリと対応する日本語がないことを裏書きしているのだろう。

あくまで私の想像だが、架空の、それゆえに引いて客観的にとらえる感じがある「物語」（”ストーリー”）に比べると、narrative は個人に入り込むというか皮膚感覚というか、より主観的な感触を伝える言葉のような気がする。

このへんは英語圏の辞書にある説明を読んでも確証は得られなかったが、定義や例文をいくつか抜き書きしておこう。

- a particular way of explaining or understanding events:
Both sides in the conflict have a narrative of victimhood.
the grand narratives of nation, race, and faith

- a. A presentation of real-world events that connects them in a storylike way: "There has been less of a coherent, connected media narrative and more of a kind of episodic focus on events, controversies and gaffes".
b. An explanation or interpretation of events in accordance with a particular theory, ideology, or point of view: the competing narratives of capitalism and Marxism.

いつも勉強になる投稿をありがとうございます。僕の感覚ではnarrativeは、ある考え方・説を主張する時によく使われる「〜というくだり」、と考えるとしっくりきます。
