stratospheric rise「一大飛躍」「大ブレーク」（大坂なおみが”うつ”で大会棄権） [ニュースと英語]
大坂なおみ選手をめぐる最近の記事を読んでいたら、stratospheric rise という表現が出てきた。同じ記事に出てくる別の単語とからめて、”言葉のあや”的に使ったものかと思ったが、検索したら、この形でけっこう使われている表現だとわかったので取り上げてみたい。
全仏オープン棄権を報じるCNNの記事で目にとまったもので、ちょっと長いが引用しよう。
- It's the modern day equivalent of the Roman Empire's gladiatorial shows. After playing for several hours, often in hot and humid conditions, with their emotional reserves ebbing and stress levels sky rocketing, tennis stars enter the media's ice cold inner sanctum -- the post-match press conference.

難しげな stratospheric は stratosphere の形容詞で、「成層圏の」ということである。
以前書いたように（→こちら）私は子供のころ雲や気象に興味があったこともあり、知っている単語だったが、ここでは大坂選手が果たした劇的な大躍進ぶりを stratospheric rise to the top of tennis 「テニスの最高レベルに登りつめた」と比喩的に表現していることになる。
記事の筆者は、ひとつ前の段落で使った skyrocket 「急上昇する」にからめてこうした言い方を工夫したのだろうか、うまいものだな、と思いつつも、念のため検索してみたら、実はそれなりに使われている言い回しであることがわかった。

なお、この中に出てきた troposphere は「対流圏」、mesosphere は「中間圏」、ちなみに「熱圏」は thermosphere である。
英語での定義を引用したが、知らない単語がこうした専門用語の場合は、まずは無理せず英和辞典を引いて日本語を確かめたほうがいいと思う。さらに、日本語で知っていても実際には何のことか理解していないこともよくあるだろうから、そちらを調べることの方がむしろ大切かもしれない。
ところで今回の大坂なおみ選手の行動については、これまでないがしろにされてきた記者会見のストレスに目を向けさせるきっかけになったという声がある一方で、それをこなすのがプロのスポーツ選手だという意見も目にする。門外漢である私には、どちらにもうなずける点があって考えがまとまらない。
もう一点、彼女が表明した depression を日本のメディアが「うつ」「うつ病」と訳していることについても一部で異論が出ている。
この単語は、「うつ病」のほか、「気分の落ち込み」「ふさぎ込み」として使われる場合もあるようだ。医師が診断を下したものなのかなど詳細や背景が不明なので、こちらについても軽々な感想は書けないが、言葉は難しいものだとあらためて感じる。
