fighting chance 「がんばればチャンスはある！」

このところ多忙でまとまった英語に触れる余裕がないので、手製の学習ノートを見返していて目にとまった fighting chance という表現を短く紹介してお茶をにごすことにしたい。

字面を見ただけだと「戦いのチャンス」ということかと思うが、「がんばって努力すればもしかしたら成功するかもしれない見込み」を指す。

学習ノートにメモしていた実例は、前後の文脈を広く取らないとわかりにくいものだったので、ウェブのニュース記事から引用しよう。

アメリカの大統領選挙でバイデン氏が当選し、上院も民主党が僅差ながら多数派になった１年前の状況について書かれたもので、すでに「今は昔」の感がある。

定義や文を読んでみても、「かんばればチャンスはあるが、しかし可能性は高くはない」のか、「可能性は高くはないが、がんばればチャンスはある」のか、どちらのニュアンスにより力点があるのか判然としないが、結局は文脈や話者の気持ちによる、ということになるのだろうか。
