aha moment 「わかった！」

前回の eureka moment に似た aha moment という表現を取り上げたい。aha は「ははあ、わかった」「へえ、そうなんだ」という意味の間投詞で、こうした声を上げるような瞬間、ということになるだろう。

次は私の学習ノートにメモしていた実例で、当時のトランプ大統領が連日ツイートを投稿していたことについてのオピニオン記事で拾ったものである。

- But here’s the thing: We don’t have to read him. We don’t have to endlessly scroll to see the latest disgusting and dangerous rhetoric he’s spewing on any given day.
Imagine if we all unfollowed Trump on Twitter. What would happen? That’s the call to action coming from Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy. His July 28 tweet reads as a very powerful “a-Ha!” moment.
Indeed, Murphy’s suggestion is something I wish I’d thought of sooner.

英語圏の辞書から定義と例文を引用しよう。The aha moment comes to... とか have an aha moment about... という形で使うことができる。

- a moment where you suddenly understand something, realize something important, have a good idea, or find the answer to a problem
After her aha moment three years ago, she began to spend more time with her family.

このほか aha を使った言い回しに aha experience や aha reaction がある。日本語でも「アハ体験」などと呼ばれているが、私には何だか居心地の悪い日本語に感じてしまう。

また aha にちょっと似た間投詞に uh-huh がある。肯定やあいずちを表す言葉で、軽い感じの「わかった」とか「うん」といったところか。強勢は後半にあるが、前半に置いた uh-uh の方は、逆に否定や同意しないことを表す。

なお、aha moment や eureka moment のように「ひらめいた」「悟った」ことを表す表現として The penny dropped. を思いついたが、すでにこのブログで取り上げていたことに気づいたので、付記したい。
