thus と thusly はどう違うか

前回 slice and dice を取り上げた際に引用したAP通信の記事に thusly が出てきた。thus に -ly をつけたものだろうと想像はつくが、どちらも副詞だ。なにか違いがあるのだろうか、少し調べてみた。

まずはAPの記事からその部分を引用しよう。メリアム・ウェブスター辞書が選んだ今年の World of the Year である gaslighting（→こちら） について書いたものだ。

- More broadly, the dictionary defines the word thusly: “The act or practice of grossly misleading someone especially for one’s own advantage.”

辞書で thusly を引くと、

- （口語）= thus
(研究社英和大辞典）

とある。やはり意味は同じということだが、thusly のほうがむしろ堅い言い方のように思われたので、こちらが口語だというのは私には意外だった。

上記の記述はこれだけでシンプルなものだったが、他の辞書を見ると、

- thus の異形であるがこの使用を認めない人も多い

- 一部の人たちは thusly を thus の無意味な同義語と見ている。用いるとしたらおどけた効果を狙った場合だけである

thus +‎ -ly, dating from the 19th century, seemingly coined by educated writers to make fun of uneducated persons trying to sound genteel, with a false inference that thus is not an adverb.

Although thusly has diffused into popular usage, it may be regarded as incorrect by some; instead, other equivalent expressions (such as thus or this way) can be used. It originated in the Eastern U.S., and it is still more common in American than British English; it is "often used for amusement or to make an ironic point."

といった注釈があった。

thusly を目にした記憶は私にはあまりないが、それは評判の芳しくない（？）単語という背景があるからかもしれない、などと考えたりもした。ただ今回の記事はAPという世界的な通信社が書いたものだし、内容・文脈的にも”おどけた効果を狙った”ようには思えず、まっとうに使っているように感じられるのだが。

なお意味のおさらいになるが、thus (thusly) は「このように」「そんなふうに」「そういうわけで」「だから」などと訳され、先に述べたことを受けるほか、次に述べることを導く場合にも使われる。冒頭にあげた実例は後者である。

今回は基礎レベルの単語ではあるが、気になって調べたらちょっとおもしろい情報に出会えたので、取り上げてみたしだいである。
