goblin mode ～他人の目なんか気にしない（Oxford版「2022年の英単語」）

ウェブスター社選定の”今年の英単語”について先日書いたが、辞書の老舗オックスフォードが選んだのは goblin mode という言葉だった。

いろいろな団体が選ぶ World of the Year は、私にもわかるような単語や事象が選ばれることがある反面、日本で普通に暮らしている身にはピンとこない選定もある。今回は後者というべきだろうか。

- ‘Goblin mode’ – a slang term, often used in the expressions ‘in goblin mode’ or ‘to go goblin mode’ – is ‘a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.’

つまり、社会の規範や人目を気にせず、だらしなく自分の好き勝手に過ごす生活スタイルを指す、ということになる。

goblin とは、ヨーロッパの伝説で「人間にいたずらを働く小鬼、小妖精」ということだが、なぜこれがダラダラと怠けた生活に結びつくのか明確な説明はなく、よくわからなかった。

この表現をオックスフォード社が Word of the Year に選んだ背景について、他のメディアの記事から引用すると、

- As Covid restrictions eased, the term continued to grow as people realised they did not want to go back to the way life was before.

コロナ禍で続いてきた規制が緩んだあとも、コロナ前の規律ある生活に戻りたくない、戻るつもりがない、という人々の心情や態度のあらわれということになるのだろう。今の社会・世相の現実を切り取っている言葉だ。

この表現が登場したのは2009年だが、今年になって流行するようになったのは fake headline がきっかけだそうで、これも何とも今風だ。

- The term was first used in 2009 but went viral on social media earlier this year, OUP said. It shot to prominence after a fake headline claimed that the rapper formerly known as Kanye West and Julia Fox broke up after she “went goblin mode.”

オックスフォード社の記事が、この言葉が使われた実例としてあげていたのが、

- “Goblin mode is like when you wake up at 2am and shuffle into the kitchen wearing nothing but a long t-shirt to make a weird snack, like melted cheese on saltines.” (The Guardian)
- “Too many of us… have gone ‘goblin mode’ in response to a difficult year.”
(The Times)

なおオックスフォードは、Word of the Year の選定を今回から一般投票の方法に切り替えた。30万人以上が投票し、goblin mode はダントツの１位だったという。ちなみに２位は metaverse、３位はハッシュタグのついた #IStandWith だった。
