quiet quitting ～がんばりすぎる働き方はやめよう！ [Word of the Year]
年始に American Dialect Society が発表する「今年の英単語」について例年取り上げている。しかし今回の選定は、非ネイティブ・非英語圏生活者の私にはよく理解できない結果だった。今年は見送ろうかとも思ったが、それでは寂しいので、次点となった quiet quitting をメモしておきたい。
この言葉は、直訳すると「静かに辞めること」となるが、実際に仕事を辞めるのではなく、
- quiet quitting: doing no more than the minimum required for a job

という、「必要最低限の働きしかしない」「最低限の仕事だけをこなす」ことを指すという。
私のような旧世代の日本人には、「がんばる」が日常的な言葉だった。「24時間働けますか」というコマーシャルのフレーズが大ヒットしたこともあった。それとは正反対の行き方・生き方である。
動詞形の quiet quit もあった。
- To cease overachieving at one's workplace to focus on one's personal life; to do only what is reasonably or contractually required; to work to rule. [since 2022]
He said that he is going to quiet quit his job because he wants to focus on his family.

Wikipedia にはこの言葉としての見出しはなかったが、work-to-rule という項目に記述があり、
- Despite the name, the philosophy of quiet quitting is not connected to quitting a job outright, but rather, employees avoid going above and beyond at work by doing the bare minimum required and engage in work-related activities solely within defined work hours. Proponents of quiet quitting also refer to it as acting your wage and say that the goal of quiet quitting is not to disrupt the workplace, but to avoid occupational burnout and to improve work-life balance.

ということで、「最低限の仕事をする」ことに積極的な意味を見出し、人間らしい生き方を志向する姿勢も指すようだ。無理して働いて燃え尽き症候群にかかったり、ワーク・ライフ・バランスを犠牲にしたりするくらいなら、仕事に見合った収入でよしとしようというのである。
「必要以上の仕事はしない」と訳すと、私のような昭和世代には後ろ向きの姿勢に見えてしまうが、それだと誤った理解になるのだろう。
ところで、Word of the Year 2022 の”大賞”に選ばれたのは（そして私にはよくわからなかったのは） -ussy という接頭辞で、American Dialect Society の発表文によると、
- -ussy: suffix from “pussy” (as in “bussy” = “boy pussy,” now humorously attached to many words); also -ussification: the process of creating new blended words with the -ussy suffix
ということだそうだが、これだけでは私にはさっぱりわからない。他のメディアの記事も参照して理解を試み、取り上げようと思ったが、結局断念した。ご存知の方がいらしたらご教示願いたい。
”大賞”は108票を獲得した一方、quiet quitting は32票だったので、次点とはいえ大差をつけられた。しかし日本人の私には、こちらの方が内容を理解できる言葉だ。
American Dialect Society の発表文は事実上”大賞”についてしか記述していないので、今回の選定を他のメディアがどう報じているかウェブで探したが、私が検索した限り、なぜか大手メディアの記事が見当たらない。
例年そんなことはないので、もしかしたら今回の結果に困惑したメディアが多かったのか、と考えるのは行き過ぎか。私の検索のやり方がまずかっただけかもしれないが。
とはいえ、-ussy よりも quiet quitting の肩を持つ、次のような記事もあった。
- As for the overall WOTY choice, I’m unfamiliar with -ussy and the process of -ussification, but I don’t frequent TikTok, which evidently is where the term thrives. I would have gone with quiet quitting, which I predict will have more staying power and which is more representative of the mood of the year.

ちなみに、今回の選定で候補にあがった中には、
- Slava Ukraini: “Glory to Ukraine!” (said in solidarity with Ukrainian resistance)
- special military operation: Russian designation for invasion of Ukraine
と、ウクライナがらみの言葉があり、日本人でも理解しやすい。
また、やはり候補になった
- Dark Brandon: sinister, powerful alter ego of Joe Biden (play on “Let’s Go Brandon”)
は、もとになった Let's Go Brandon を１年前にこのブログで取り上げている（→こちら）。
