ネアンデルタール人 Neanderthal と新型コロナの話題２題 [ニュースと英語]
先週、Neanderthal 「ネアンデルタール人（の）」という単語が出てくる新型コロナウイルス関連のニュースが２つ続けて目にとまった。おもしろい偶然なので、取り上げてみよう。
まずは、アメリカの一部の州でマスク着用の義務を取りやめたことに対して、バイデン大統領が「ネアンデルタール人の考え方だ」と批判したというものだ。
あちこちのマスメディアで取り上げられたが、バイデン氏の発言をそのままの形（verbatim）で長めに紹介していたのがABCニュースの記事だった。同じ言葉の繰り返しが話し言葉らしくて、おもしろい。
- "I hope everybody has realized by now these masks make a difference. We are on the cusp of being able to fundamentally change the nature of this disease because of the way we are able to get vaccine in people’s arms."

"And the last thing, the last thing, the last thing we need is the Neanderthal thinking that in the meantime everything’s fine, take off your mask, forget it. It still matters. ... It’s critical, critical, critical, critical that they follow the science."

これに対して、解除したテキサスなどの州知事が共和党であることもあってか、共和党員の一部や保守系の人が「原始人呼ばわりするとは何ごとか」と非難の声をあげた。
Neanderthal は、比喩的に「時代遅れの人」「頭の固い人」、また「野蛮な人」「粗野で暗愚な人」を指す場合にも使われる。
バイデン氏は以前から失言が多い (gaffe-prone) ことで知られるが、報道官は「行動がネアンデルタール人のようだと言ったまでで、マスク着用は必要という医学上の指針に従わないことへの不満の表明だ」と釈明した。

She also said Biden’s comments were “a reflection of his frustration” about Americans not following public health guidance to limit their risk of contracting coronavirus.

Neanderthal の比喩的な意味については、「おどけて（使う）」と記述している英和辞典もあった。しかし言葉尻をとらえることがある政治などの怖い世界では、こうした辞書の説明が額面通り通用するものでもないといえそうだ。
下記に引用するように、英語圏の辞書にも「おどけて」使えるというようなニュアンスは書かれておらず、公の場での使用には気をつかう必要があるのだろう。なお「ネアンデルタール」は最初に化石が見つかったドイツの地名に由来するが、こうした単語の常として、カタカナ表記から想像する発音や強勢の位置とはかなり違うので、そちらにも注意が必要だ。

２つ目の話題は、英誌 The Economist の最新号（２月28日号）で目にした "A mixed blessing: DNA from Neanderthals affects vulnerability to covid-19" である。

現生人類はネアンデルタール人と交配していたことがDNAの分析から明らかになっているが、われわれがネアンデルタール人から受け継いだ遺伝的な要因が、新型コロナウイルスの重症化軽減に関係しているらしい、という研究を報じるものだ。
先日、「エコノミスト」誌の言葉遊びについてのエントリ（→こちら）で書いたように、私はこの週刊誌の紙版を図書館で読んでおり、上記ウェブ版は購読料を払わないと全文が読めない。しかしこの研究については、他のメディアでも広く伝えられている。
次は、CNNの記事からである。
- People who survive a bout of Covid-19 with mild symptoms or even no symptoms may be able to thank their Neanderthal ancestors, a new study suggests.
Researchers found a genetic mutation that reduces the risk of severe Covid-19 infection by about 22%. It was found in all the samples they took of Neanderthal DNA, and in about 30% of samples from people of European and Asian origin.

ネアンデルタール人は、かつては浅黒く毛むくじゃらという姿で描かれることが多かったと思うが、金髪碧眼の”人種”もいたという説も出ているなど、かつてのステレオタイプ的なイメージは変更を迫られているらしい。
新型コロナウイルスの重症化を防ぎ、またわれわれの英語学習にも恩恵をもたらしているとしたら、「原始人」「洞穴人」呼ばわりするとご先祖様のバチがあたりそうだ。まさに "thank our Neanderthal ancestors" すべきなのだろう。
